Center for Visual Culture
We build on the traditions in art and archeological study at the College while supporting inquiry and exploration into modern visual expression.
About
As one of the College’s original Centers for 21st-Century Inquiry, we draw upon Bryn Mawr’s rich traditions in art and archaeology and augment them with an equally rigorous study of visual media from the invention of photography and film in the 19th century to the ubiquitous digital media of the 21st. Throughout the 20th century, the College was a distinguished site of study of the ancient and modern visual arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Since 1999, the CVC has hosted a weekly Colloquium featuring presentations by scholars across various disciplines and talks by visual artists, curators, and theorists who engage and challenge in this forum. Presentations sponsored by the Center are free and open to the public.
