Airea Dee Matthews' Book of Poetry is Finalist for Hurston Wright Legacy Award

Airea Dee Matthews, associate professor and co-chair of creative writing, has been named a finalist for the Hurston Wright Legacy Award in Poetry for her collection Bread & Circus.
The Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards program honors Black writers in the United States and around the globe for literary achievement. Introduced in 2001, the Legacy Award is the first national award presented to Black writers by a national organization of Black writers. The winners for the Legacy Awards will be announced at a gala event on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the Washington Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Matthews won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Bread and Circus in April, and was also named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow.
