In a recent field session, students in the Archaeological Fieldwork and Methods course practiced their mapping skills, and in the process, captured gorgeous images of campus in its fall colors.
In the class taught by Assistant Professor of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Rocco Palermo, students are introduced to archaeological fieldwork methodology and get hands-on archaeological mapping experience through seminars, lab training, and in-field practical sessions. Throughout the semester, they discuss discovery and recording techniques and explore data mapping (e.g, aerial/satellite imagery, drone photography), collecting (cloud-based apps, GPS-enabled artifacts collections, etc), and processing (e.g. databases, 3D modeling, GIS-based maps).
In their field session, students used a planned flight app and sent a drone to fly transects over campus to map possible archaeological features. The students captured 160 images of Old Library, which they were able to stitch into a 3D model.
