Gail G. Glicksman, Assistant Dean for Health Professions, Appears on Podcast
Gail G. Glicksman, assistant dean for health professions advising at Bryn Mawr was a guest on a special edition of the DocsWithDisabilities Podcast series.
The episode, "Medical School Admissions for Students with Disabilities," was developed from a session Glicksman organized for a National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions conference that couldn’t meet in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the podcast, Glicksman talks about the almost superhuman persona that has been applied to many healthcare workers during the pandemic and the effect it may have on some considering a career in medicine.
"Individuals can contribute a tremendous amount to their patients and to the field of medicine without being 'perfect' in any ways, in all ways," says Glicksman. "And indeed those who are aware of challenges of some sort are in better positions to use strategies, to be able to meet the challenges that they face."
Topics covered during the podcast included determining whether or not to disclose information about a disability and at what stage of the application process; identifying schools that offer the best environment and resources to thrive as an individual with a disability; and advice for requesting accommodations for the various stages of the admissions process, including evaluations associated with admissions review or logistics for the interview day.
Glicksman is a leader in the field of prehealth advising, with a particular emphasis on developing resources to enhance access to training for students with disabilities. She has co-authored articles on the topic and organized three previous sessions at meetings of the national or regional association of health professions advisors. She was joined on the podcast by several representatives of the University of Michigan Medical School.
