What’s happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!
Musicopia is a non-profit organization which provides equitable access to music education and enrichment, encouraging self-confidence, global awareness, dedication and joy in Pre-K to 12th grade students and their communities. Musicopia has a partnership with Dancing Classrooms Philly, so I’m helping with both organizations. Since we are a virtual office, I work remotely. When there are events in Philadelphia, I go there and help. We’ve had a thank-you donor event, DCP 10-year celebration, instrument give-away, and a students spring orchestra concert. On weekdays, I attend staff meetings and learn sessions. I’ve done some research on giving programs, program statistics reports, and press outlets. I’m also doing media related tasks such as transcribing speeches, video editing, and photo selecting. In the remaining three weeks, I plan to try some new tasks from different departments.
Why did you apply for this internship? Was there anything special about how you found this internship?
I applied for the Summer of Service program first, and then I found this internship. As a rising senior and an international student, I was thinking about what I want to do in the future. I want to have some social experience before graduating from college. The Summer of Service program is a good start for me to explore my possibilities and to see what I could do for the Bryn Mawr/Philadelphia community. The most intriguing area to me is Community Arts. It’s significant to me because firstly, art plays an important role in expressions and mental life. I believe Community Arts is meaningful and makes a difference. Secondly, I feel like doing some creational and artistic work and am interested. So, I really want to have a try in this area. When Lisa and Ellie recommended Musicopia to me, I think it’s a great fit for me to explore. I believe what Musicopia and DCP are doing is very meaningful and impacting. They are encouraging and helping thousands of kids and providing them with more possibilities.
What has been your favorite part of this internship?
My favorite part is the activities I attended, especially the student spring semester concert. There are kids from elementary schools to middle schools. I took photos for them, helped with setting up, gave directions, and sent out fliers to audience. They play the string instrument really well, which surprised me. It was awesome to enjoy the concert while working. Their beautiful pieces marked their accomplishment, which made me proud of them and proud of Musicopia!
