On November 18, the Graduate Group of Science and Mathematics hosted a professional development seminar, "Building a Professional Identity Online." Camilla MacKay and Alicia Peaker from Library & Information Technology Services walked students through the process of establishing and online presence geared to professional audiences. They stressed the importance of “googling” yourself to determine what people will find when they search your name. In order to get in front of the Google search list, they suggested linking your professional webpage often, with appropriate social media accounts. They also discussed the benefits of making scholarly work open-access, and introduced the group to Bryn Mawr’s Open Access Repository.
Prior to the workshop, students searched the web for examples of professional webpages in their fields. They came to discuss aspects of them that they liked and disliked. As a group, they generated ideas for the layout, organization, and content of their own professional webpages. Afterwards, participants were invited to start creating their own professional webpages. Graduate students, Ziva Myer and Samantha Pezzimenti shared their own webpages and discussed the pros and cons of the platforms they used (Google pages and Wix) and the group offered feedback.
