Elizabeth Lee Professor and Chair, Department of Art & Art History (Dickinson College) and Julia B. Rosenbaum, Professor of Art History and Visual Culture (Bard College) "Sites/sights of Health: Late 19th Century Medical Institutions, the Medical Humanities, and Art History" This presentation considers how late nineteenth-century institutions of medical science utilized the visual to address notions of broken, damaged, or diseased bodies. We focus specifically on the US Army Medical Museum’s collecting of Civil War morbid anatomy and its display practices, and on Eadweard Muybridge’s 1887 Animal Locomotion series at U Penn titled “Abnormal Movements” to investigate the productive intersections of art history and medical humanities.
