Colloquium in Visual Culture with Maggie Cao
Maggie Cao David G. Frey Associate Professor Director of Graduate Studies University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill "Into the Muck: Prints and the Terrestrial Archive" This talk considers how print theory and geologic theory came together in the landscape prints of Mary Nimmo Moran. Nimmo Moran was a prominent figure in the revival of etching in the late nineteenth-century United States and one of the few women artists who gained international recognition for her plein air prints. Among her favorite artistic subjects were the swamplands near her Long Island home, ecosystems known for being fossil repositories throughout the Northeast.
