Join us for 'Exceptional circumstances make exceptional people,' a talk by award-winning author Kim Thúy. A book signing will follow the event.

Kim Thúy left Vietnam at the age of 10, along with a wave of refugees commonly referred to in the media as “the boat people” and settled with her family in Quebec, Canada. A graduate in translation and law, she has worked as a seamstress, interpreter, lawyer, food critic and restaurateur.

She is an award-winning author who has received the Governor General’s Literary Award in 2010 for her first novel RU, which traces a Vietnamese family's journey from Vietnam to Canada. She was one of the top four finalists of the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2018.

Kim Thúy's books have sold more than 765,000 copies around the world and have been translated into 29 languages and distributed across 40 countries and territories. Marked by her own experience, her work engages with questions of identity and belonging at the intersection of postcolonial studies, food studies, and disability studies.
