Scheduling and Organization

As you navigate your time at Bryn Mawr, it is important to remember that your experience of success is also greatly impacted by the systems you use to manage your responsibilities and commitments. Developing an effective organizational system, building your time management and priority-setting skills, and creating a balanced schedule will help you experience personal and academic success each semester.

Discovering the systems and strategies that work for you will take trial and error. There is no one-size-fits-all system to follow, and often your systems may need to change from semester to semester, year to year, as your priorities, goals, and commitments change. Use the information on the different pages in this section on scheduling and organization to help you set yourself up for success.

Before you dive into assessing your current systems or creating new ones, you may want to engage in metacognitive self-reflection around your commitments this semester.

Self-Reflection Exercise: What are my commitments this semester?
  • How would I like to grow or sustain my relationships this semester/year?
  • How will I prioritize my mental and physical health?
  • Are there new hobbies or interests that I would like to explore?
    • What old hobbies or interests do I want to make time for or start again this semester/year?
  • What am I most looking forward to this semester/year?
  • How much time do I anticipate spending on planning and participating in these relationships, hobbies and interests, and my well-being?
  • How might my academic commitments have changed from last semester/year?
  • What courses am I taking this semester?
  • What other academic commitments am I going to be participating in this semester?
    • Examples of other academic commitments may include assisting a professor with their research, praxis or internship placements, attending departmental lectures/programs, and meetings with a faculty advisor, class dean, or an academic coach.
  • How much time do I anticipate spending on planning and participating in these academic commitments?
  • What clubs, organizations, and/or sports teams do I participate in?
  • What role do I have in each of them?
  • How much time will they take up each week?
  • Do I have / do I want an on-campus or off-campus job?
    • How many jobs do I want to have?
    • How many hours will I be working each week?
  • How much time do I anticipate spending on planning and participating in these activities?
