Admissions Statistics and Trends
Outcomes for 2024 admission will be available when the admissions cycle concludes.
It is important to recognize that many factors contribute to the decisions made by medical school admission committees. An applicant’s grade point average is important, but medical schools also take seriously clinical experience, leadership, and service on campus and in the community, and the depth and breadth of a candidate’s academic curriculum. Bryn Mawr’s rigorous liberal arts curriculum prepares students in critical thinking and other skills vital to success in the health professions.
We support students considering or applying to programs in a variety of health professions, including dentistry, nursing, physician assistant, pharmacy, public health, veterinary medicine, and many others. The number of students applying to some of those fields each year is smaller, so we are not presenting the outcome data here.
The applicant pool ranges between 20-25 applicants. As is typical of our peer institutions, many of these applicants are recent graduates.
Yes. We will write a committee letter for every applicant who applies and meets our internal application deadlines. Bryn Mawr has no GPA or MCAT score cutoff below which we will not provide advising support to our undergraduates and alums. We provide individualized advising to help each person
Admission to medical school is an extremely competitive process. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) acceptances for the past 10 years has been consistent with some fluctuations from year to year.
The most recent cycle for which data are available for both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools if for those starting their programs in Fall 2023.
* 43% of applicants to allopathic medical schools matriculated in 2023 (52,577 applicants for 22,981 places)
* 43% of applicants to osteopathic medical schools matriculated in 2023 (23,488 applicants for 10,152 places)
* 77.5% of all Bryn Mawr applicants for allopathic and osteopathic were accepted to a US allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
Because our cohorts of students and alums applying to medical school each year are relatively small, we group information over several years.
We prepared qualified data for those applying with scores approximating the national figures for accepted applicants: We used the benchmark of 127 on each section of the MCAT and a 3.4 or higher on the STEM GPA.
*During the period from Fall 2019-2023, 90% of the Bryn Mawr students and alums whose MCAT scores were 127 or above in each section and whose STEM GPA was 3.4 or higher were accepted to a US allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
* In Fall 2023 on the national level, the Science GPA of matriculants to MD schools was 3.71 with a CUM GPA of 3.77 and the Science GPA of matriculants to DO schools was 3.50 with a CUM GPA of 3.60.
Students are curious about admissions patterns for Bryn Mawr students and alums who apply to medical school.
When considering undergraduate schools, it is important for a prospective student to try to evaluate which school provides the best environment to thrive and to achieve success in the academic sphere and to gain the competencies outside the classroom that medical schools seek. Typically, a student can cultivate the best possible profile, when they are in a school that is a good "fit" and that provides them with an environment that promotes their success.
It is important to consider measures of success in addition to percentages of students admitted: Our students and alums apply to medical and other health professions schools with credentials that vary. Each year, many students and alums gain highly competitive and highly coveted opportunities.
- It is not common for medical schools to award merit scholarships. Among Bryn Mawr applicants to begin medical school from during the period from 2016- present, several received merit scholarships to highly regarded medical schools, including Georgetown University Medical School, Ohio State University, and the University of Michigan Medical School.
- During the past few years, several affiliates matriculated to combined MD/PhD programs with full Medical Scientist Training Program funding at Emory University, at Case Western Reserve University, at the Harvard University-MIT combined program, at the University of Connecticut, and at Washington University (St. Louis).
